Fine Art photography means many things to many people, so I'm going to give you my definition.
Fine Art Nude photography follows in the footsteps of traditional artistic and aesthetic sensibilities. While it may have a modern, twenty first century approach it should still be on those same guiding lines that go back through the centuries.
For me the defining part of a fine art nude photograph is a love and admiration and wonder in the shape and form of the nude figure. This may be a whole figure in a pictorial setting or a abstract composition of body parts with no context.
I strongly believe that fine art nudes should not be sexual. Although nude, the figure should not present an object of desire. Instead the focus is on graphical presentation of something wonderful.
The nude does not need to be female, but it nearly always is. My personal view is that humans are hard-wired to find the curves and shapes of the female form appealing. Sadly for us men, we mostly look a bit silly when naked.
Most fine art nude photographs also exhibit an inherent simplicity. They are not typically set in complicated sets, instead simple backgrounds allow the viewer to focus on the essential shapes.
All photography is dependent upon shadow. For all we talk about capturing the light it is actually the shadows that give the sense of depth, of modelling and shape to our subjects.
For fine art nude photography this is more crucial than many other forms of photography. We are not necessarily seeking to provide detailed representational images that document the form. Instead we are often hinting at shape and line.
As a final view, a fine art nude photograph should not normally be a portrait of the sitter. For this reason the subjects gaze would normally be off camera, or the head may not even be present in shot.
